Net Worth

I started tracking my net worth in October 2007, just four months after a job with my second employer/second year in the workforce. There are a few reasons I track my net worth.

  1. Eye on the prize: I’m trying to get to a sustainable asset level with no consumer debt. Meaning we need several million dollars (TBD) and no credit card balance/loans/mortgages (business debt is okay) to live a financially free lifestyle.
  2. It’s still working: Let’s me know all my assets are making other baby assets that grow; and my debt is being chipped away.
  3. Reminder of humble beginnings: when it seems like the prize is so far away, I just have to look at my spreadsheet and realize 10 years ago I had no (negative) net worth. Today, my wife and I are in the top ~25% of net worth in the United States and top 6% in our age group!
